Compendium of Curiosities 28 - Alcohol Ink Ombre

Hey, Howdy All! It's another Compendium Saturday. And that means it's time for a new challenge!

The Compendium of Curiosities III Challenge is hosted by our lovely hostess Linda Ledbetter on her blog. Each challenge comes from the wonderful book "A Compendium of Curiosities Vol. III" featuring amazing products and techniques by non-other than Tim Holtz.

Join us with your creation based on the featured technique and your project could win you an awesome prize pack from Tim and Mario and you also have a chance to win the random draw from our generous sponsor this time: The Funkie Junkie Boutique. All the details, rules and links are at the end of my post so be sure to keep reading all the way through.

Today's challenge can be found on page 57 in the book, and it's called "Alcohol Ink Ombre." I decided on a big tag for this one, and to step outside my comfort zone and use purple. Something about the color purple in my paper crafting usually makes me want to cringe, but I think with the right balance of opposing colors it works.

Let me take you through my process..
Here's the end result of the Alcohol Ink Ombre technique. Can't tell you how it's done, that's for you to find out for yourself, but I can tell you that I used Eggplant, Purple Twilight, and Wild Plum alcohol inks.

I went one step further and performed the Faded Layers technique using the Stars stencil. Remember that one from page 58? We did that back in August last year.

While I had the Stars stencil out, I used it to trace onto black cardstock for the size of tag I wanted. Not too big, not too small. Just right.

After spritzing my non-stick craft sheet with the new Fossilized Amber Distress Stain (totally LOVE this color!) and some Tarnished Brass, I dipped a piece of Mixed Media Cardstock into it and let the colors meld and dry. Then I ran it through my Vagabond using the Crescent Moon & Stars die (which you'll see in a bit).

I grabbed some Graphic 45 striped paper which is black and ivory (Artisan Style, 6 x 6 pad) and gave it a spritz of Fossilized Amber Stain, and now my paper is yellowy-golden with black stripes! I do this all the time when I need a particular color in my project. I attached a bit of this to the top of my big black tag.

On my Alcohol Ink Ombre piece, I put some tissue tape across the top and stamped the phrase with Jet Black Archival.

I assembled more papers and fiber to the tag base as shown.

After painting two metal photo corners with Fossilized Amber Distress Paint and letting them dry, I attached them to the bottom corners of my tag.

I ran a piece of black cardstock through the Crescent Moon & Stars die and layered each under the coordinating golden ones for a drop shadow effect, then hung a heart charm from my moon with some waxed twine. I attached everything to my tag using foam tape behind the moon and some of the stars for dimension and interest.

I added some mirrored stars here and there to give a bit of sparkle, too.

For a finishing touch, I grabbed some black 2" wide tulle and inserted it through my tag top and tied it into a very unkempt bow.

Here's another look at my finished tag, which I gave to my daughter Jamie who I truly LOVE to the moon and back!

Now it's YOUR turn to try this fun technique. Let's see what you've got!
