Starting to see spots - final Dotty For You sample

I promised to try and use up ALL the papers in the new "Dotty For You" paper packet but try as I might, I still haven't. I have to say, though, that I don't have a single full 12 x 12 piece left anymore. These scraps will get organized into a flat clear bag and filed with my papers so I have quick access when I need to make a bright and colorful card or tag.

My final sample today is another scrapbook layout. Ever since I saw the papers in this promotional paper packet, I knew that they would be perfect for a Summer-themed layout for my teenager. Before I share it with you, I wanted to preface it with this...

I often am asked by customers and friends where I come up with my ideas. Do I always create my own designs or am I inspired by others? And I tell them "YES." Both are true, of course. Like many of you, I look to the internet, magazines, and all around me for inspiration. Especially when I'm feeling a little "dry" in the creative sense. BUT I never copy. I am looking more for composition, balance, and techniques then I take it from there and give it my own twist.

There are other times; those great, wonderful moments when I grab some paper and a stamp set and know exactly what I'm going to do with them. A vision just pops into my head immediately. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's fantastic when it does!

I thought I'd share my inspiration for the layout I mentioned above, to give you an idea of how I like to operate. My creative process, I guess you'd say.

In the May/June 2012 issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine (pg. 56) I saw this fun layout by Amy Tan. (No, not the bestselling novelist of whom I'm a huge fan.)

I love her use of different pattern papers all over the layout. I'm one of those designers that loves to use as much of a pretty paper pack as possible. Sometimes it can get a little busy, so one has to be careful. The key here is to keep all the patterns on the smaller side so you get more of a feel for color and texture rather than pattern.

This is my layout using the "Dotty For You" papers. Be sure to click on the photo to get a closer look.

Yesterday I knew I was going to use Amy's layout composition for my pages, and this morning I saw this great banner idea on the Echo Park Paper Blog...

So simple, yet so graphic. Be sure to visit Echo Park's Blog here to see Leslie Ashe's tutorial on making this fun banner.

Since I already had so much pattern going on in my layout, I opted to keep the banner pretty uniform. In a future layout, however, with different papers I will certainly cut each banner piece from a different pattern paper. I love how that looks! You'll notice I didn't butt my banner pennants right next to each other. Again, because of the same pattern, I felt it best to separate them a little. The stamped stitching pulls all the pennants together. ("Stitched Together" stamp set from Close To My Heart) And the banner pennants are cut from the Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge. (Banner2, pg. 29)

  1. Amy's layout also caught my eye in the CK magazine, however I think I like yours better!! The Dotty papers look awesome with this design and the layered pennants are so cool!
