Checking for a pulse...

In the past year, I've noticed that I don't receive comments on my blog posts nearly as much as I use to. I was having lots of issues with spammy commenting so for a while I had to turn on comment moderation. This means that your comment could be left and would be posted once I reviewed it. That's when I saw the comments drop off to next-to-nothing.

I myself don't visit blogs nearly as much as I use to. That's why I love Instagram and all the other "quickie" methods of seeing creative projects. Just a quick hit of the LIKE button and I move on.

So I'm asking you, my creative friends and followers, is this the case for you as well? Or perhaps you've tried to leave a comment and had an issue? Either way, I'd love your feedback.

I'll always keep my blog as my home base. No worries there. Thanks for taking a second and leaving me your feedback on this. It's very important for me to know what's happening, where the comments have gone, and how you're feeling about my content.

Comments

  1. I don't do Instagram. I rarely check Pinterest. I use RSS to scan blogs, hundreds of them, including yours. They cover a variety of interests, but most of what I follow is related to paper craft or art. I like paper craft blogs that show photos and give details on process and supplies. Sometimes I'll watch a video. I like seeing short overview videos on Facebook posts so I can go to the blog and access the longer version if I can't figure out how to do something that looks interesting to me.
I prefer social media that support contacting the poster. Sometimes, like now, commenting is fine. Sometimes I'd prefer to keep my comment private, and am frustrated when no private contact information is to be found.
That I only access content on my laptop (which makes it easy to move images and text from place to place for sharing) may have some impact on my choices.

    2. Thanks so much for the feedback. I appreciate it more than you know. As I suspected, viewers are busy just like me. It gives me comfort to know this now. Thanks again.

  2. I think everyone is having the same difficulty with comments/posts as you are Annette. It is also more cumbersome with all the spams/comment moderation/not a robot gadgets as well and time is of the essence as we are all busy people but love to catch up with blog friends for inspiration etc. I am not on Instagram but a few friends are and they say its so much easier with no editing/linking etc. I really need to give it a thought !!
    Best wishes

    1. Thank you Annie for taking the time to respond. Instagram is a great tool for quick views. I use it all the time as a starting point to drive viewers to my blog for more details. It’s worth checking out since it’s the popular trend now.

  3. Whew Annette, so glad you are not giving up your blog!! I will be honest, I comment on dozens of blogs each week because I love looking at what people create, different styles etc... However, even though I have not stopped commenting on others, the comments on my blog have dwindled significantly and I have, like you, wondered why this should be. I do get lots of comments on Facebook now, where I didn't before... so I think it is just simply that people don't have time these days (at least I hope that is what it is!). I started my blog so that I could have a record of my projects over the years and I think I will just carry on and maybe blogging will become popular again! Anne xx

    1. You are so right Anne. I do think it’s more about the quick hit nowadays. My blog stats show lots of traffic. So people are visiting, just not commenting. Thanks so much for taking time to give feedback. Very sweet of you.

  4. Hi, Annette. I've been following your blog for several years. I occasionally post on Facebook but rarely take the time to post on blogs (unless there's a contest involved! Tacky, right?). I like blogs because there is more detail, with instructions and videos, that is so helpful. I guess we don't think about the person creating the blog and how much work and thought they put into them. A friend and I signed up for your class in Tallahassee in June, which I wouldn't have known about without your blog. I've been wanting to take a class from you for a long time, and I'm looking forward to meeting you! Thank you for all you do.

    1. Oh Sue! Thanks so much for your feedback. I’m excited you’ll be coming to the Tallahassee event. I’ll be looking forward to meeting you. (And don’t worry, you’re not alone on the “giveaway comment” thing. That’s when I get the most comments!) see you soon!

  6. Hi Annette, As others have mentioned, we're all busy, busy, busy! I've recently started following your blog but also just got a new job with a huge learning curve so it's hit and miss. I don't do instagram (there's only so much I can do!) but I love seeing detailed pix of projects. I also may comment for contests but not to those with many, many blogs; I just don't have time. I'm sure there are more than a few email alerts to visit your blog I haven't gotten to yet and I look forward to checking them out! Thx.

  7. I pretty much am in line with what others have said here. I do have an Instagram and a Pinterest account and I do check instagram daily (Pinterest only for when a contest/challenge requires a post there) but I hate both sites’ constant suggestions of who to follow (Real Madrid? Really?).

Like others, I keep a blog as a record of what I have done in my crafting “life” and have never paid a lot of attention to how many follow me or comment. That was not my goal in setting up my stitchery and paper crafting blogs (although I do use the latter for entering challenges a lot!).

As for commenting, I admit to being a slacker in that regard. Aside from the occasional “thanks for sharing”, I usually can’t think of what to say that others have not already said.

Also, some blogs, with their robot/capcha stuff do not work well with me. For some reason, I often have to enter the codes several times, especially when on my iPad. And when a blog comment asks for my password to a particular platform, i often lose long detailed comments while searching for what that password was/is (wordpress in particular but also Google where I have two accounts and usually find myself in the one I never check!)... which leads to frustration and abandoning the attempt.

    1. Hi Carol, thanks so much. Your feedback is so important to me. I’m hoping by turning off the comment approval option, things will Go soother for viewers. I see that the traffic is there, by viewing my stats, but I just got to wondering if people were having trouble commenting. Otherwise, I had no way of knowing. Thanks again for taking the time to write. Very helpful!

  8. I too have been following your blog and work for several years. I remember one time you offered a free 'make a bow' template, which I still use today! I would say ditto to many of the comments above...but to also add that I usually will leave a comment on those that I know actually reply back. The human element is one we all still crave and I've noticed I readily will open those blogs to those I've had rapport with. The human back and forth, even with very popular well known artists, impresses me that they feel those of us out here admiring their work are worth something too.

    1. Thank you Roxanne. Your feedback hit home with me because I haven’t been very consistent with replies to my viewers’ comments. This is a very helpful piece of info for me. Thank you for following and for your comments over the years. I really appreciate it!

  9. A lot of times I check in on a break or lunch hour at work. Posting replies on blogs from work are iffy at best. So many things are blocked out that are Google related. I follow you here, on Facebook and on Instagram - I do try to comment on the various social media sites. I'm here and looking but it's harder to post replies these days

  10. Hi, so glad you are not giving up your blog, I love the video tutorials! Instagram is a fun way to get inspired and easy to tip tap that you love what you are seeing, but I love blog post and I am not one to comment very often but maybe I should. Never really gave it much thought so thank you for letting us know that bloggers really do like the feed back. :)

  11. I'm in the same boat. But honestly haven't been much in the creating mood since my husband's death last year. I like the idea of keeping the blog current, if only for a personal record of your art. I signed up for Instagram but don't know how to use it and am tech-challenged when it comes to using my cell phone to connect to FB, etc. I don't look at blogs as much as I used to; I think my creative side has taken a long siesta. My craft room needs a complete overhaul. Perhaps that will spur me to get back into being creative.

    1. Oh Susan, I’m so very sorry. Of course you aren’t feeling very creative or wanting to comment. I can totally understand that. Hopefully your creative side will not be dormant for long and will bloom and grow again. Baby steps. Perhaps an art journal would be a good outlet for you. Just a little paint or something on a page can be so healing somehow. And no one has to see it. It’s all you! A great place to unload emotions. Best of luck to you. It means so much to me that you stopped to take the time to give your feedback. Best of luck to you, and keep in touch so I can see that you are healing okay.
