Compendium of Curiosities III #8 - Faded Layers

Challenge #8 for the Compendium of Curiosities III book is another amazingly simply technique with really cool results. It's called "Faded Layers" and you can find it on page 58 of your CC3 book. I LOVE this one, because of the WOW factor when you lift the stencil. (and that's all I'll say about the technique.)

Please read through to the end of my post for all the details on this fun challenge, how you can enter, how you can get a signed copy of the book from Tim Holtz himself, and how you can WIN prizes by participating.

My project for this challenge is a Halloween card. I know it's early for Halloween for some of you, but it's NEVER too early for me. And once I saw the new Stampers Anonymous releases for the season, I placed my order as fast as lightning!

My 5" x 7" card has a black base, purple background, then all kinds of layers of goodies on top. Let me take you through it.

Here's my take on the Faded Layers technique, featuring the new Gothic stencil from Stampers Anonymous. It gets covered up so much on the card, I just had to show it to you by itself. So cool!

For my paper layers, I selected Tim's Laboratorie Paper Stash and added some Distress Stain to pull the colors together.

A poison label is a must on a Halloween project, don't you agree? This is also cut from the same paper stash.

Using the Gothic Boo Sizzix Alterations die, I cut the 31 twice and layered them together.
(You'll see later.)

I stamped two different sized pumpkins (the small one is from the new Mini Halloween 4 set, and the larger one is from the Carved Halloween set) When I saw those awesome samples from this entry on Tim's blog, I knew I had to get BOTH of these great sets!

Okay, I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to marker coloring, but I kinda know what I'm doing, I think. So I thought I'd share how I went about coloring my pumpkins. I started with Spiced Marmalade here.

Then most of the remainder of the pumpkins were colored with Ripe Persimmon.

When I went for my Rusty Hinge marker to do my next step, I found that it was starting to dry out.

So I grabbed my Ink Refresher spray and gave the felt tip of my marker a few spritzes and it came right back to life!

Now I was able to fill in the rest of the pumpkins with refreshed Rusty Hinge.

For the eyes, nose, mouth and stem I used Wild Honey.

And to finish them off, I added Vintage Photo on the stem and added a few touches under the eyes, nose and mouth.

When I assembled the card, I stacked the small guy on top of the larger one.

From Kraft Core cardstock, I cut some leaves and sprigs from the Sizzix Alterations die "Festive Greenery." Yes, it's intended more for Christmas (holly and such), but I think these make great, creepy Halloween leaves.

There's the layered 31 popped up with foam tape with a few more leaves coming out from behind the numbers. A seasonal Chit-Chat sticker warns you as Halloween approaches.

I hope you liked the tutorial, and I hope you're having fun with these challenges. Try this one out and get that WOW factor. You'll love it!
