Bon Voyage Card Tutorial featuring By The Sea

The Greens are officially on their way to London! I'm busting, I'm so excited for this trip. While I'm away, you'll magically see posts on my blog from time to time. That's because I've scheduled a few posts before leaving. And if it's not too much trouble, I'll try to blog a few things while in London on hubby's Chromebook. If not, then Instagram and Facebook for sure. (If you're not already following me there, the links are right here in the righthand column of my blog.)

Since we're taking off tonight, I thought it good timing to post this Bon Voyage card I created with Graphic 45's By The Sea papers. Okay, we're not exactly "sailing" to London, but you get the point. This card would be great for any happy travel or journey wishes.

What makes this card extra fun is that it's a pop-up on the inside...

We'll start with the inside of the card first.
It starts with Sizzix's Pop 'n Cuts Base die (Square with Ornate Edge #658378. Recently discontinued, but you can find one online, I'm sure of it) and Pop 'n Cuts insert (Suitcase, 3-D, #658377). Cut the base from Kraft card stock then cut another base--with the insert in place--from the Gathering Seashells 12 x 12 paper. Cut off 1-inch from the ornate ends and save one piece for later. For the single suitcase, cut another kraft card stock piece with the insert in place. Ink all edges with brown ink. I am rather fond of Gathered Twigs Distress Ink lately.

Adhere the pieces together. You'll notice I cut two 3/8-inch strips from the striped side of the Set Sail paper for my suitcase.

Cut apart decorative strips, sea shells, and journal tags to adorn the inside. All these cuts are from the 8" x 8" paper pack. (Splash and By The Sea specifically.) The stamped "Bon Voyage" is from the Tim Holtz/Stampers Anonymous cling set "Getting There" (THJ004).

When building the inside of any Pop 'n Cuts card, I find it best to keep the elements as flat as possible so the card closely nicely and there's not too much bulk.

Now the front of the card.
Cut just the lower half of the Pop 'n Cuts base from 8" x 8" Set Sail paper. Then make some more cut aparts of elements from the paper pack. The compass is stamped then punched out with a 2-inch circle punch. This image comes from the By The Sea Cling Set #2 by Hampton Art for Graphic 45.

Layer up the elements to the front of the card. Notice I added that piece to the bottom that we saved earlier? I also trimmed the blue piece so that there's kraft card showing top and bottom. A piece of kraft card stock is also behind the By The Sea cut-apart. Edge distressed and inked.

Add some more cut-apart shells popped up with foam squares, a nautical charm over the stamped compass and some natural twill ribbon. And you're done!

Another look at the finished card.

Thanks for popping in today. I'll be in touch as soon as I can. Have a great day!

My only suggestion- don't bother with tubes- you can walk to so many of city's main sights much quicker and easier than you think and you'll see much more! Enjoy! Oh and Libertys of London on Regent Street!
