Creative Carte Blanche - Wood, a Word and Something Wild

Hi everyone. Thanks for your patience here on my somewhat neglected blog. As many of you know, May is a super busy month for high school families, especially when also planning a trip to Tokyo the week after graduation. (*Yippee!*)  We are very excited, but so busy right now we don't seem to have time for thinking or talking about the trip yet.

With all that aside, I've been working like crazy trying to meet deadlines and work requirements before we go. And today I'm sharing my take on the May creative adventure introduced by the lovely Cheryl Grigsby on the Creative Carte Blanche blog where she challenges us with the three W's. Wood, a word, and something Wild. Candy Colwell took on the challenge first and has created a sweet and clever miniature cabinet with all sorts of mixed media goodness. You don't want to miss it, so be sure to visit her blog here.

After checking out the challenge, why not give it a go yourself? Create a piece of art according to the guidelines, then upload your project to the CCB blog using the InLinkz at the bottom of the post. We'd love to see what you come up with!

Here's my wildly colorful, little wooden plaque with the one word SING.

My creation started with some rummaging through my stash of wooden items. I found a simple wooden plaque (about 5" x 7") and grabbed some pretty washi tape. The tape is by Heidi Swapp and it's SO pretty, but my roll had a little problem tearing along the long edge rather than peeling up cleanly. I rather liked the irregularity of it, so I decided to embrace it and started taping lots of overlapping strips onto the wooden plaque.

After trimming the edges clean with an Xacto blade and ruler, I painted the outer portion of the plaque with Dina Wakley Media paint in Blushing. It's rather bright! This is when I decided that my "Wild" was going to be a wild color palette. Something a little different for me.

Before adding a narrow ribbon and some yellow washi tape to the sides, I brushed a coat of Multi-medium in Vintage Photo to tone down the brightness of the colors and to seal everything.

I added this pretty gold scallop trim around the perimeter next.

Next I die-cut the Bird Silhouette (Tim Holtz) from some vintage-patterned teal paper and stamped a crown, cut it out and placed it on my birdie's head.

Then flowers, stems, and music notes to fill in.

My word is "Sing" and is die-cut from orange pattern paper, then more flowers in the corner.

The bright leaves are from a Martha Stewart punch, and I added veining and shaping with my Susan's Garden tools.

To finish it off, I added this bright pink checked ribbon and a bow for hanging.

These are definitely colors I don't normally use, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing with them! So my Wild thing could be the bird or the wild bright colors. I think I'll go with the colors.

Okay, now it's your turn! Why not join us in this fun creative adventure? Upload your project at this link so you can share it with others. We'd love to see what you do!

  2. Oh my gosh, Annette! You KNOW what a fetish I have for birds! This little wall plaque is absolutely adorable! I love the washi tape in the background and I am like you...I love that it torn unevenly and you overlapped it. That looks so cool. Beautiful colors! I adore that bird die cut and the paper you used on it. I also love the gold crown! The little gold scallop is such a nice "frame" for your piece and the flowers in opposite corners give your piece some gorgeous dimension and tie all of your colors so perfectly together. Girl, I truly love this! Your "WILD" colors make the piece!

  4. All I can think of Annette, when I see this SPLENDID creation, is the old Cole Porter song....

You can hear dear Mother Nature
    Murmuring low,
    "Let yourself go!"
So please be sweet, my chickadee,
    And just say to me,
    "It's delightful, it's delicious,
    It's delectable, it's delirious,
    It's dilemma, it's delimit, it's deluxe,
    It's de-lovely".

Your creation just is totally DELICIOUS, DELECTABLE, and DELICIOUSLY deLOVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Xj
