12 Tags of 2013 - August Journal Page

Hello and Happy Monday to ya! Today I've been playing with masks, creating my journal page based on Tim Holtz's August Tag of his 12 Tags of 2013. I learned a few things that I wanted to share with you.

But first, here's how my page turned out...

My pages are 6 x 8 inches on Bristol, vellum surface, 100 lb. by Strathmore. At the end of the year, i will create a book with rings.

I'm pretty happy with my page but, like I said above, I learned a few things that I need to share with you.

Share #1: If you don't have the Distress Stains Tim used, you can substitute with Distress Inks. Sort of. Rub the pads right onto your non-stock craft sheet, spritz with water, spritz your tag with water, and then swipe. I found that using just Frayed Burlap and Pumice Stone made my page very light. Not enough color for my taste, so I added Vintage Photo in the same manner. I still had some pretty light areas, so I used a blending tool and more Frayed Burlap to swirl more color into those spaces.

I did a little "Spritz and Flick" action with water, simply because I LOVE that effect. Then I inked the outer edges with Walnut Stain.

Share #2: When using Distress Markers on your stamps, don't forget to HUFF before stamping. This moisture from your breath reactivates the inks. Many of you probably already knew that though. These two stamped images are going to be my masked ones.

Share #3: When masking (not shown) and then stamping a big giant black area of a cruise ship, don't expect to get all the areas close to the mask to fill in with the black ink. I had to go back in with my Black Soot marker and fudge it. You can't tell, can you?

Share #4: I was a good girl and followed Tim's directions when creating my mask. And by that I mean that I used Staz-on ink, let it dry, then cut closely around it. What I learned, however, is if you stamp over the mask with Archival Black ink (my cruise ship) and then want to rub off that black ink from your mask, guess what? I wipes out everything! No big deal. I can still use the mask. Just passing that info on to you. I would just stamp with Black Soot Distress next time.

I masked off the compass (not shown) and then stamped the other. This turned out really nice so far.

But when I darkened around the mask with some Walnut Stain, that's when I saw that I didn't cut my mask quite close enough to the stamped image. See the halo? Oh well, Tim warned me. So that's what I'm passing on to you. Share #5: Cut right on your stamped outer line. As you can see, I added a little pop with some Distress Markers on my compass. I may color more later, but for now I like it.

I stamped Bon Voyage using the new Fern Green Archival Ink by Wendy Vecchi/Ranger. Love those new shades she's introduced. Then I stamped my birds with Archival Black. I added a touch of Salty Ocean Distress Ink above the ship too. Share #6: Just like Tim warns us all the time, if you're going to swirl color onto a page/tag, make sure you start off the tag and move in a swirling motion. If you are doing an area in the middle of your page like I did, just be extra careful and use a very light touch so you don't get those hard lines from the sponge on the blending tool.

Another look at my finished page. I don't mind the little imperfections one bit. I enjoy the learning process and am happy to pass it on to you.

Thanks for stopping in today. Have a great day!
